Dr Koen Pouwels is an Associate Professor of Infectious Disease Health Economics at the University of Oxford. His research sits at the intersection of economics, epidemiology, and policy, focusing on how to prioritise interventions against infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the context of constrained resources and inequality. He leads an interdisciplinary research programme whose methods and findings are used by national governments, the World Health Organization (WHO), and global funders to inform investment decisions on antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease control. Dr Pouwels is a member of the UK Government Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Prescribing, Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection (APRHAI). His work has directly shaped various (inter)national policies aimed at reducing the burden of infectious diseases and AMR.
