Maggie is a scientist turned businesswoman, and former Member of Parliament for Erewash.
After obtaining an Honours degree in Biology from Manchester University, she began her career at Calderdale Health Authority as a biomedical scientist, gaining professional qualifications in Haematology. Remaining in the health sector, Maggie moved into medical diagnostics sales and marketing with a pharmaceutical company, gaining further qualifications in Marketing before establishing her own healthcare marketing consultancy.
Maggie entered politics through her involvement with a community campaign to save an area of green belt from inappropriate development and has since gone on to lead a number of campaigns on a wide range of issues.
In Government, Maggie served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State at The Department for Health and Social Care, a Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury and Government Whip and as the Minister for Vaccines and Public Health during the Covid-19 pandemic.
With a career-long passion for health, Maggie applied her knowledge and expertise to her role as Minister for Vaccines and Public Health, effectively ensuring the impactful rollout of the Vaccines programme during the Omicron phase of the pandemic. Maggie was awarded an OBE for this work.
Maggie has had an interest in tackling Antimicrobial Resistance over many years, both commercially and politically, at the diagnostic level and through policy change.
