Dr Wendy Thompson

NIHR Clinical Lecturer, University of Manchester

Wendy Thompson is an academic general dental practitioner (GDP): an NIHR Clinical Lecturer at University of Manchester and GDP in South Cumbria. In 2020, her doctoral research won the Antibiotic Guardian research award for its focus on reducing antibiotic prescribing during urgent dental appointments.

Wendy is the lead author of the FDI World Dental Federation’s 2020 white paper on antibiotics in dentistry and lead educator of the BSAC/FDI MOOC ‘Tackling Antibiotic Resistance: What Should Dental Teams Do?’ She is also an honorary consultant in the NHS Office of the Chief Dental Officer (England) and advisor to the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE) and British National Formulary (BNF). Wendy graduated in microbiology from University of Warwick, she gained her BDS from University of Liverpool and her PhD from University of Leeds.
